AI Video Goes Viral, Mocking Trump's Manufacturing Promises Amid Tariff Tensions

Apr 09 2025

The art of trade war is taking a new twist with the rise of viral content. An AI-generated video that pokes fun at the idea of Americans returning to factory jobs has recently gained traction, racking up over 6 million views. This surge in popularity coincides with President Trump’s ongoing tariff agenda aimed at revitalizing U.S. manufacturing.

The video, which seems to undermine the Trump administration's claims of creating American manufacturing jobs through tariffs, features a rather unflattering portrayal of U.S. workers. It shows larger-bodied, downcast “Americans” laboring in sweatshop-like conditions, all set to a twangy soundtrack reminiscent of traditional Chinese music.

In this satirical depiction, the American workers are characterized as overweight, middle-aged, and somewhat dim-witted, sitting idly at sewing machines. The clip was shared by TikTok user Ben Lau, who captioned it with a nod to Trump’s slogan, “Make America great again #tariff #america.”

Other figures in the video are dressed in matching gray uniforms, reminiscent of workers at Foxconn, as they assemble iPhones on a mock assembly line that mimics actual Chinese factories. The video was later reposted on X by user Damon Chen, who added a laughing-crying emoji to emphasize the mockery.

Despite the video’s humorous intent, it sparked a wave of criticism. Many viewers took issue with the apparent insult directed at the tariff plan and the disrespect shown towards factory laborers. One user remarked, “When manufacturing was here, America was great. Why do liberals think this is demoralizing or something?”

Another user shared a personal story, stating, “My mom worked in a sewing factory for 15 years. She raised us after dad left, stayed off welfare, and kept food on the table. It was a good job, and I’m thankful she had it.”

Others chimed in with their own experiences, recalling happier times in manufacturing. “My dad worked in an electronics factory assembling circuit boards when I was a kid on Long Island. It went away in the 1990s. The people seemed jovial and happy,” one user noted.

The video also ignited discussions about the broader implications of labor practices, with many interpreting it as a direct jab from Chinese nationals at Americans, leading to criticism of China’s alleged use of child laborers.

However, not everyone was supportive of the video’s message. One commenter pointed out, “Except if the factories are ever built here, they will be staffed by robots, not people.” Another user, seemingly from Canada, labeled the video as “very misleading propaganda.”

This online exchange comes at a time when the U.S. and China are embroiled in a “tariff war.” The Trump administration has imposed a staggering 104% tariff on Chinese goods in response to retaliatory tariffs from China. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent commented on the situation, stating, “It was a big mistake, this Chinese escalation.”

Bessent further elaborated, “We are the ‘deficit country.’ So what do we lose by the Chinese raising tariffs on us? We export one-fifth to them of what they export to us. So that is a losing hand for them.”
