Arkansas Teen Fatally Attacked by 30-40 Neglected Dogs During Feeding Attempt: 'Kindest Soul'

Fifteen-year-old Makayla Fortner lost her life in a tragic dog attack on Wednesday while attempting to feed a group of malnourished dogs in Alexander, Arkansas, located approximately 17 miles from Little Rock.

Fortner, along with her mother, Stephanie Wilkie, had been working to rescue the dogs after observing their dire living conditions. The pack, estimated to number between 30 and 40, had been left neglected by their owners.

Witness Ralph Murphy recounted the harrowing scene as first responders arrived. He observed a Saline County deputy discharging his firearm multiple times to disperse the aggressive dogs. “I watched a Saline County deputy come out and go up to the fence, and a bunch of dogs ran up to the fence,” Murphy stated. “He pulled out his pistol and shot into the ground twice, and the dogs ran.”

Despite the deputy's efforts, Murphy later saw a body on the ground, confirming the worst fears of those who had been concerned about the dogs for months. Neighbors had repeatedly reported the escalating situation to local authorities, only to be told that there was no animal control available in Saline County.

Heidi Clay, another neighbor, expressed her frustration over the situation, noting that the dogs were so “vicious” that parents were afraid to let their children walk to the bus stop. “When they moved in, all the neighbors were very upset. They moved in with a huge amount of dogs and a large amount of broken vehicles,” she said. “This was a beautiful young girl who lost her life because these people did not properly take care of their dogs and have a hoarding issue.”

In the aftermath of the attack, Benton City officials seized 14 dogs from the property, euthanizing them due to safety concerns. However, four dogs remained locked inside the house during the incident.

The Saline County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding Fortner's death, with assistance from Benton animal control.

Fortner was a student at Bryant Public Schools and is remembered fondly by her community. A GoFundMe page established in her honor describes her as a “beautiful, bright girl with the kindest soul.” The page highlights her infectious smile and laughter that brought comfort to those around her. “She is deeply loved by her family, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing her,” it reads.
