GOP Nominee John Reid's Alleged Involvement in Gay-Porn Controversy Divides Virginia Republicans Before Crucial Election

May 05 2025

Virginia Republicans are currently experiencing a significant rift following GOP Governor Glenn Youngkin's request for the party's lieutenant-governor nominee, John Reid, to withdraw from the race. This request comes in light of allegations that Reid posted explicit gay pornographic content on a Tumblr account linked to his Instagram handle.

Upon discovering the images, Youngkin urged Reid, a well-known radio host in the Richmond area, to step aside. However, Reid has firmly denied ownership of the account in question and has refused to comply with the governor's request, leaving party members scrambling to find common ground just six months ahead of the crucial 2025 off-year election.

“That’s not my account,” Reid asserted after the scandal was brought to light by local media. “Anyone on the Internet can open accounts with the same or similar names as other people. I’m not going anywhere.”

Reid's supporters have accused Youngkin and his allies of targeting him due to his sexuality, as Reid is Virginia's first openly gay statewide nominee. This accusation has added another layer of complexity to the situation, as the party grapples with issues of representation and inclusivity.

Youngkin, however, has characterized the gay-porn scandal as a “distraction” that could potentially harm the party's chances in the upcoming election if it continues to dominate the narrative. “One of the reasons why I called John last Friday morning was because these kinds of situations, where there is just a historical recognition that social media and explicit, explicit social media content like this is a distraction,” Youngkin explained to reporters last week.

He emphasized the importance of focusing on pressing issues, stating, “It’s a distraction for campaigns, and it’s a distraction from people paying attention to the most important issues, and here we are today talking about fentanyl and saving lives, and the distraction is present.” Youngkin noted that he had a serious personal conversation with Reid regarding the matter.

In response to Youngkin's swift action, several prominent Republicans in Virginia have voiced their discontent. Arlington GOP Chair Matthew Hurt expressed his disappointment, stating, “If this is how the Governor’s political operation wants to close out his term in Richmond — by tossing a grenade into the statewide Republican ticket — it’s truly a shame.”

Meanwhile, Virginia's current Lieutenant Governor, Winsome Earle-Sears, who is also a Republican and a candidate for governor, refrained from calling for Reid's resignation. “John Reid is the Republican nominee for Lt. Governor. It is his race and his decision alone to move forward,” she stated. “We all have our own race to run.”

Earle-Sears is currently engaged in a competitive gubernatorial race against former Representative Abigail Spanberger, the Democratic candidate. Notably, Youngkin is unable to run for re-election due to Virginia's law prohibiting governors from serving consecutive terms.

As the controversy unfolded, Youngkin began to adopt a more conciliatory tone towards Reid, emphasizing that the decision to remain in the race ultimately lies with the nominee. “We’ve got to get on with winning. This is John Reid’s decision. He is the Republican nominee for lieutenant governor,” Youngkin remarked to reporters late last week. “He has clearly made up his mind that he’s going to stay in. I think the debate can stop there, ’cause that’s the answer. I have said that I will support the nominees and their ticket.”

Matt Moran, a longtime aide to Youngkin and head of the Spirit of Virginia PAC, has denied any allegations of conspiring to pressure Reid out of the race. “I’ve known John Reid for years and consider him a friend,” Moran stated on social media. “Over the last nine days, I was actively supporting and assisting John as the Lt. Governor nominee of the Republican Party. Let me be clear, facts matter, and they will demonstrate the accusations against me are unfounded.”

Youngkin, who previously served as co-CEO of the financial giant The Carlyle Group, made headlines when he won the governor's office in a surprising upset during the 2021 election. His victory marked the first time a Republican had secured the top office in Virginia since 2009, igniting speculation about his potential candidacy in the 2028 presidential elections.

As the GOP navigates this internal conflict, Youngkin is focused on maintaining the party's gains in Virginia, a state that has leaned Democratic in recent years. Heading into the off-year election, Republicans are facing significant challenges, as Virginia, alongside New Jersey, is often viewed as a bellwether for national political trends that could impact the 2026 midterms.

Virginia has been particularly affected by job cuts implemented during the Trump administration, especially through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). With approximately 145,000 federal workers residing in the state, many of whom live just across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., the economic implications of these cuts are significant. In response, Youngkin has launched a website, virginiahasjobs.com, along with a resource package aimed at assisting those who have lost their jobs due to these reductions.
