Weta Digital Meets Tolkien: Special Effects Developments that Made “The Lord of the Rings” Possible
Nov 27 2018
“The Lord of the Rings” trilogy put Weta Digital on the map. Writer, director, and producer Peter Jackson sat down with Rotten Tomatoes recently to reflect on the technical innovations at Weta that brought Middle Earth to life – including the giant leap forward in motion-capture performance that resulted in Gollum, one of the most memorable movie characters of the past 20 years. In this exclusive interview with Jackson and Christian Rivers – who directed the upcoming, Weta-enhanced “Mortal Engines,” and worked on the “Rings” films – the duo detail how they adapted the character design of Gollum to match Serkis, how the actor’s performance completely changed their approach to special effects, and how their innovations for Gollum changed the industry for decades to come.
