Black Star: A Story Of Self-Repatriation To Africa (History Documentary) - Real Stories Original

After being hassled by the police in Oakland, California, African-American musician Sunru Carter decided to 'repatriate' himself to Ghana. He retraced the journey of his great-grandfather who had been enslaved in Ghana; sold in Charlottesville, Virginia; and taken to work on the planation of James Monroe, 5th President of the United States. Sunru’s journey to Ghana followed three years of living in different countries looking for a secure, sustainable way to live. Preparing for the trip, Sunru reconnected with his family in Virginia where he had grown up, reflecting on his relationships with his mother, daughter and close family. Once in Ghana he tried starting a fashion brand which he could sell internationally. The forces pulling Sunru this way and that are accompanied throughout the documentary ‘Black Star’ by his spontaneous drumming and chanting as he strives to live life to a different beat. His conclusions surprised him as much as us the audience. Sunru was conscious of the fact that as we move into 2019 we mark the 400th anniversary of the first slaves being taken from West Africa to the Americas.
