Heather’s Monologue from ‘The Blair Witch Project’ | Rotten Tomatoes’ 21 Most Memorable Moments
Jul 12 2019
‘The Blair Witch Project’ was a pop-culture phenomenon back in 1999: The viral marketing campaign, huge box office success, and mystery around how “true” its story actually was all caused such a stir that the buzz overshadowed, for some, what was a genuinely terrifying moviegoing experience. (Or, an at-home viewing experience; we still think ‘Blair Witch’ is best viewed alone in the dark on a VHS.) In the years since, its legend has only grown: Say ‘Blair Witch’ and most people talk about the start of found-footage cinema and how writer-directors Dan Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez created one of the most profitable movies of all time; fewer people acknowledge how white-knuckled and sweaty they were the first time they saw it. A lot of the movie’s unique terror comes down to the performances of its leads, particularly Heather Donahue as the documentarian who leads her team into danger. In this exclusive interview, we talk to Myrick and Sanchez about how they conjured nighttime terrors, coaxed incredibly realistic performances out of their actors, and the movie’s most memorable moment: Heather’s teary confession and apology. This behind-the-scenes breakdown of the scene is part of Rotten Tomatoes' Most Memorable Moments series, celebrating the most electrifying, terrifying, moving, and hilarious movie moments from the last 21 years.
