ournalist Maria Ressa and her Manila-based news site Rappler are the subjects of new documentary "A Thousand Cuts." Since 2016, Ressa and her team have been leading the fight for freedom of the press in the Philippines, as president Rodrigo Duterte continues to target Filipino journalists. Ressa speaks with Variety anchor/reporter Audrey Yap about the tenuous state of democracies around the world, how she learned to embrace the fear of going to jail and why social media is emotional manipulation.
