Inside Simon Cowell's Health Struggles

When TV personality Simon Cowell temporarily traded his chair on America's Got Talent for the seat of his new electric bike, he likely thought he was in for some fun. But as a rep for Cowell told People in August 2020, the TV personality took an unexpected tumble and broke his back, literally. Apparently, while testing out the new vehicle at his Malibu home, Cowell lost control and landed himself in the hospital, where he underwent surgery for his injury. An inside source told People, "Simon had surgery overnight and is doing okay this morning. It was a five-hour surgery and he has had to have a number of fusions and metal rod put into his back...The injuries are bad but he's also been told he was lucky." Cowell also took to social media to address his accident. He wrote on Instagram, "Some good advice...If you buy an electric trail bike, read the manual before you ride it for the first time." Cowell also thanked his fans for their supportive messages, and extended gratitude to the nurses and doctors who helped treat him for his injury. While the true severity of his injuries hasn't been made public, Cowell appears to be in fine spirits after his successful procedure. This isn't the first time the universe has seemed to urge Cowell to slow his pace. Cowell previously collapsed while at his home, becoming lightheaded and falling down the stairs of his London mansion, as Express reported in 2018. Cowell claimed his collapse was caused by low blood pressure brought on by the stress of his fast-paced lifestyle, and that despite the initial scare, this event put his priorities in perspective, and encouraged him to slow down. He explained, "It has changed me...No more late nights, and I'm getting up earlier. I feel a million times better, genuinely. You reach a point and you go, 'What's all this for?' You don't want to kill yourself working." Instead, Cowell found himself wanting to prolong his life as long as possible so that he can see the world through the eyes of his son Eric. Cowell altered his daily routines to preserve his health, but in the process, observers noted that his appearance seemed to be changing rather drastically. While plastic surgeons believe he's undergone multiple cosmetic procedures, Cowell has explained that his dramatic weight loss was the result of his clean-eating habits. Cowell explained that a specialist advised him to eliminate red meat, dairy, sugar, bread, and gluten from his diet, and he's also begun to actively reduce his alcohol intake. The star also said that he gets most of his food inspiration from his son, whom he says eats a surprisingly healthy diet, with plenty of water and raw vegetables. After all, Eric was the main factor behind Cowell's desire to change, so it's only fitting he now leads the charge toward his dad's healthier lifestyle. Cowell's collapse served as a reminder that he's not invincible. To help kickstart his 20-pound weight loss, Cowell completely eliminated comfort foods, a bittersweet decision since, as he told The Sun, quote, "That's all I've eaten all my life." Despite what may have been initial misgivings, Cowell has since reportedly gone vegan, and claims it wasn't as hard to lose those foods he loves than one might think it would be. He told The Sun, "Once you get into a pattern I've found it quite enjoyable. It has helped me sleep and I wake up feeling less tired. I noticed a massive difference in how I felt in about a week." And while son Eric's habits rubbed off on him, it seems Cowell's new routine sparked a change in partner Lauren Silverman's lifestyle, too. Cowell said, "She's not going to sit there and eat a pizza in front of me. That would be cruel. She's kind of gone the same way as me." Kudos to them for making good health be a family affair!
