Why Jennifer Lawrence Hated Her Romantic Scenes With Chris Pratt

While actress Jennifer Lawrence skyrocketed to superstardom as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games, her unfiltered interviews continue to endear her to fans each time she hits the late-night talk show circuit. But during her roundtable discussion with several other A-list actresses for The Hollywood Reporter in 2015, the Silver Linings Playbook star revealed the reason she hated filming her first love scene with Passengers co-star Chris Pratt. Surrounded by legendary actresses like Jane Fonda and Helen Mirren, Lawrence noted that the scene was "really bizarre" and "really weird," and explained, Lawrence then shared how she prepped for the scene and revealed, "You drink. I got really, really drunk. But then that led to more anxiety when I got home because I was like, 'What have I done?'" However, the scene only sparked pangs of guilt because it was the first time Lawrence had to kiss a married man, as Pratt was still with actress Anna Faris at the time. Lawrence continued, "And I knew it was my job, but I couldn't tell my stomach that, so I called my mom and I was like, 'Will you just tell me it's okay?' It was just very vulnerable and you don't know what's too much, and you want to do it real, you want everything to be real, but that was the most vulnerable I've ever been." However, with two of Hollywood's funniest young actors, it's no surprise that they emerged with hilarious details about their attempts to keep things professional. At the peak of their popularity, actress Jennifer Lawrence and actor Chris Pratt signed on to Passengers, in which their characters find love after waking from suspended animation 90 years too early. Despite their obvious acting talents, both Lawrence and Pratt found their love scenes quite awkward, including their characters' first kiss, as the pair had to overcome the obstacle of wearing oversized spacesuits. Lawrence told USA Today, "We didn't know that was going to happen. So they called 'action.' And we went to kiss. And it was like, Donk! Donk! [...] Our heads couldn't reach each other. We had a good laugh about it, and we incorporated it into the movie." Yet despite the awkwardness, the two have nothing but respect for one other. Pratt told Vanity Fair, "We became fast friends, and I can never get tired of Jen. [...] She's always fun to hang out with. We laugh a lot, and I had the best time making the movie with her." However, comments about their close connection started to fuel rumors of an affair between them. As two of Hollywood's most desirable and charismatic stars, it was only a matter of time before the tabloids manufactured an affair between Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt as they filmed Passengers. In fact, Pratt's then-wife Anna Faris was even warned to prepare for the rumors in advance, as she wrote in her memoir Unqualified, "Even before they met in person, my publicist, out of the blue, pulled me aside and said, โ€˜Anna, listen, there are going to be paparazzi all over them, there are going to be shots of them laughing together on their way to set. There are going to be stories circulating, and you have to brace yourself for this.'" The Scary Movie star continued, "I'd always taken pride in our relationship, and the coverage, even though it was just false rumors, was making me feel insecure [...] Jennifer [Lawrence] and I really are friendly, and she was apologetic even though she didn't need to be, because she hadn't done anything wrong [...] but of course it's hurtful and also embarrassing when people are saying your husband is cheating on you [...] You still feel, and look, like a fool." Lawrence came under fire once more when Faris and Pratt announced their divorce in August 2017. But, yet again, the American Hustle star denied rumors of an affair during an interview with KIIS FM and said, "I never had an affair with Chris Pratt on Passengers. [...] That's a good one. [...] I mean they got a divorce like two years later, and everybody was like โ€” Jennifer Lawrence! And I was like, what the?" It would seem that Lawrence's romantic scenes with Pratt were so awkward because the pair have always been just friends and nothing else.
