Little Tabitha From Bewitched Is An Absolute Bombshell Now
Dec 01 2020
Actor Erin Murphy, who played Tabitha Stephens - the pint-sized witch who wiggled her nose into everyone's hearts on the popular 1960s sitcom Bewitched - is all grown up! And she's been pretty busy following her role on the show.
Murphy dove into the entertainment industry as a baby, landing her first job in a Folgers coffee commercial at just 11 months old. And she wasn't even 2 years old when she and her fraternal twin Diane landed the role of Tabitha, in 1966. But it was immediately clear that Erin was the one who loved the cameras. She told ABC News,
"From the time I was a baby, I [loved] it. I liked the lights and loved being on my set. My sister used to cry when they would bring her on set. Even now she hates it."
As the twins got older, Erin assumed the role entirely until the show wrapped in 1972. Murphy has fond memories of her Bewitched days and loved growing up on the set, remarking that her on-screen parents Elizabeth Montgomery and Dick York and, later, Dick Sargent were like real parents to her. The young actress was also very close with Agnes Morehead who played her grandmother on the show.
Murphy told ABC,
"[Agnes] was probably my favorite person on the show in retrospect. […] I had grandparents who lived in other states I didn't get to see and she didn't have grandchildren, and we had a really great, loving relationship."
The series finale aired in 1972, when Murphy was just 8 years old. But she kept busy and continued working, mainly in commercials. She told Life After 50,
"I did over 80 commercials up until I was in junior high. By then, I kind of lost interest, because I was into things like cheerleading and school activities."
From then on, Murphy maintained a pretty normal life, attending El Toro High School in Lake Forest, California. There, she was a cheerleader and was even crowned homecoming queen. But, as she told The Tolucan Times,
"I think that my 'normal' might be different from other people's 'normal.' […] I'm friends with people from The Brady Bunch, Happy Days, The Waltons, just about any TV show you can name that has kids."
Since the years she spent as a child star, Murphy has tried her hand at a variety of professions, including working as a casting director, fashion stylist, acting teacher, and hostess at a Karaoke club. But, ultimately, she found her way back to the business in reality TV. She first found success as a correspondent for Fox Reality Channel, and later appeared on Hulk Hogan's Celebrity Championship Wrestling. She told The Tolucan Times,
"I had never even watched wrestling before I did the wrestling show. It was scary and wonderful and awful and kind of everything you would imagine and I'm really glad I did it."
Murphy was also a contestant on RuPaul's Drag U, a spinoff of the hit series Drag Race, where she got schooled by some of the most iconic queens in the game. Having handpicked Pandora Boxx as her professor, Murphy admitted that she learned a lot during her time on the show, explaining to Socialite Life,
"I mean, you kind of go in there and it's all for good fun, but I have to say a lot of the drag tricks translate well to the red carpet, so I kind of got some posing pointers."
But Murphy's passions extend far beyond show business. According to A&U Magazine, she has been an AIDS advocate for years. The outlet also noted that her Bewitched co-star, Elizabeth Montgomery, was also a longtime AIDS activist and that the two often attended fundraising events together. As a mother of six boys, family has always been a priority for Murphy. And when her son was diagnosed with autism, Murphy became an invested advocate for the cause.
She also proved there's nothing she won't do for her kids when she bought an alpaca ranch as an outlet for her son. She blogged,
"Our family first got involved with alpacas as a form of pet therapy for our little boy with autism. As parents of a child with special needs, we were also thinking of a long-term career option for our son, since animals are his greatest love."
