Hollywood Rushes To Defend Sasha Obama After Viral TikTok

Sasha Obama is living the high life. When she's at home with her parents in Washington, D.C., the 44th president's daughter has her own two-room suite in their apartment, complete with a living room, where we like to think she practices her dance moves. You probably saw the TikTok video of the 19-year-old Obama sibling rapping Moneybagg Yo's "Said Sum" remix. That video went viral and provoked a mini Twitter heart attack back in October 2020. Are you ready for season 2? Earlier December 2020, another since-deleted TikTok video was copied on to Twitter, to the entire Twitterverse's alternating fascination, approval, and horror. In it, Sasha Obama, with nails as fierce as Dolly Parton's, jams out to Popp Hunna's song "Adderall (Corvette Corvette)." Then, before Twitter could catch its breath, an unrelated, unverified photo started making the rounds, showing someone who at the very least looks a lot like Sasha Obama at a social gathering wearing a bikini. The photo garnered widespread attention and coverage, even though several outlets and commenters hedged their bets on the possibility that the woman in the photo wasn't even her, but just someone who looks like her. That lack of certainty didn't stop people from dragging Sasha Obama's name into some weird, critical reactions to the photo anyway. Our three observations: First, if that is Obama in the photo, then someone taught her to accessorize like a pro. Second, she and her group of friends know how to put their free time to good use in these TikTok videos. Third of all, can somebody please tell people to stop posting TikTok videos of Sasha Obama for a second so that Twitter can stop hyperventilating? Regarding the TikTok videos, Newsweek dedicated an article to the tweeters who had the gall to criticize how many white friends that Obama's youngest daughter seems to have — a pretty bold thing to judge based on one social media video. Even so, not everybody was offended about the idea. The Sun responded with over 1,000 words about how Sasha has become, in their words, "a very relatable teen." Yahoo! Entertainment wrote in wonder about how, despite the fact that Sasha Obama has no social media accounts of her own, she still manages to cause a stir, or in as they put it, break the internet, every time a photo or video clip of her living her life goes public. The Twitter uproar over Sasha Obama's latest TikTok video got so heated that the web site Jezebel weighed into the fray, asking readers, heatedly, to leave the young woman alone. A deputy editor of Hello Beautiful also stepped into the conversation, condemning "internet prudes" on "their social media soapbox." Then, it was Hollywood's turn to weigh in. Vice President-elect Kamala Harris's niece, Meena Harris, shouted angrily at Twitter to, quote, "Keep Sasha Obama's name out of your damn mouth," and was promptly retweeted over 2,000 times. Meanwhile, several players in the entertainment industry also circled the wagons around the president's daughter. Singer-songwriter Aubrey O'Day wrote her own heated appeal in favor of Obama, telling people to keep their comments clean when speaking about the younger Obama daughter. Meanwhile comedian, actress, and podcaster Akilah Hughes snarked, "I heard some ugly old white people are mad that Sasha Obama is hot and young? [...] If they go any lower we have a moral obligation to stomp them into hell." Finally, no modern-day Twitter showdown would be complete without The Good Place actress Jameela Jamil, who has made it something of a thing, lately, to come to people's defense on Twitter. #SashaObama #TheObamas
