Jodie Foster's Kiss To Her Wife At The Golden Globes Has Everyone Talking
Mar 02 2021
Jodie Foster planted a big kiss on wife Alexandra Hedison's lips during the 2021 Golden Globe Awards on February 28th, 2021 in an adorable moment that has everybody talking.
Foster was clearly in a celebratory mood after she won the award for Best Supporting Movie Actress for her performance in The Mauritanian, beating out Glenn Close for her work in Hillbilly Elegy, Olivia Colman's performance in The Father, Amanda Seyfried in Mank, and News of the World's Helena Zengel.
In the movie — also starring Tahar Rahim, Shailene Woodley, and Benedict Cumberbatch — Foster plays Nancy Hollander, the real-life defense attorney of Mohamedou Ould Salahi. The production is based on Salahi's 2015 memoir Guantánamo Diary, which tells his story of being held without charge for 14 years at the Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp.
Foster was clearly overwhelmed by her win at the 2021 Golden Globes, and the sweet interaction with her wife got plenty of attention as the ceremony aired on NBC, Hulu Plus Live TV, and YouTubeTV.
During her acceptance speech, Foster spent her time thanking her co-stars and declaring her love for her wife, Alexandra Hedison.
Hedison was proudly by Foster's side as she accepted the award from home via video link, with both wearing pajamas. Foster began her speech by planting a big kiss on her wife's lips as they sat on the sofa together with their dog — a terrier cross named Ziggy.
After the kiss, Foster claimed to be speechless, saying that she didn't expect to win the award.
In addition to her co-stars, she also thanked the people whose real-life stories inspired The Mauritanian. Calling him out as "the person that we all serve," Foster said,
"We love you Mohamedou Ould Salahi — you taught us so much about being a human being, and being joyful and forgiving. That's a lesson you give to all of us."
Foster also thanked Hedison and made a reference to football player Aaron Rodgers, seemingly as a nod to his own shoutout for her during his NFL MVP speech earlier in February.
That shoutout, delivered on February 6, didn't just make audiences scratch their heads. It came as a surprise to Jodie Foster, too, as she explained in an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live on February 19.
Foster then promised that if she won the Golden Globe later that month, she would return the favor and thank Rodgers in return. True to her promise, Foster wrapped up her acceptance speech by saying,
"I love my wife, thank you Alex and Ziggy and Aaron Rodgers, the Hollywood Foreign Press, right? This is awesome! What a night!"
It's safe to say Jodie Foster's sweet PDA with her wife went down very well with Golden Globes viewers, as social media was flooded with praise for the couple.
One person tweeted,
"Jodie Foster has been one of my role models since I came out in 1993. She's led an admirably private life; to see her so happy & kiss her wife on TV is quite something to many of us. Yes, even in 2021. It's the little things. Every ounce of representation matters."
Another wrote,
"I just watched Jodie Foster kiss her wife on camera. This is something I never thought I would see, and I am extremely emotional about it."
Jodie Foster's decision to kiss Hedison during the 2021 Golden Globes held extra significance. The actor spent years being notoriously private about her personal life and sexuality before she came out as gay on the award show eight years ago.
Foster publicly confirmed her sexuality for the first time during the 70th Golden Globe Awards in 2013 while she accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award.
She said during that speech,
"I already did my coming out a thousand years ago, in the Stone Age. Those very quaint days when a fragile young girl would open up to friends and family and co-workers then gradually to everyone that knew her, everyone she actually met. But now apparently I'm told that every celebrity is to honor the details of their private life with a press conference, a fragrance, and a primetime reality show."
She gave a shoutout to Cydney Bernard — with whom she shares her sons Charlie and Kit — describing her as her "ex-partner in love" and "most beloved BFF of 20 years." Foster then went on to marry Hedison in April 2014.
