Here's What Really Happened To Mitt Romney's Face
Mar 03 2021
Utah Senator Mitt Romney says he is feeling better after a weekend accident that left him with stitches and a black eye. Romney, who is 73, told CNN's Manu Raju that he, quote, "took a fall [which] knocked me unconscious, but I'm doing better." According to a Tweet, The accident happened while he was visiting his grandchildren in Boston, and the former governor was taken to a local hospital where he received "a lot of stitches". Romney was quoted as saying, via the Boston Globe,
"I asked the doctor how many stitches and she said 'I don't know,' but it's all throughout my eyebrow and my lip."
The cause of Romney's accidental fall is unknown, as of this video, but he managed to joke that he had gone to the Conservative Political Action Conference which took place in Orlando, Florida over the weekend, and "That [it] was a problem." It's no secret that Romney has distanced himself from former President Donald Trump, particularly after he voted a second time to impeach Trump for insurrection in February 2021. The senator seems to have been poking fun at how his position as a moderate within his own party has made him less than popular with quite a few in the republican party - and even his home state of Utah.
Mitt Romney wouldn't be the first politician to show up in public with obvious injuries. In November 2020, then President-elect Joe Biden broke his foot while playing with his dog, Major. Biden told CNN at the time,
"The little pup dropped the ball in front of me for me to grab the ball ... and I grabbed the ball like this, and he ran, and I was joking running after him to grab his tail. And what happened was that he slid on a throw rug, and I tripped on the rug he slid on. That's what happened."
He added, "Not a very exciting story."
And while initial X-rays didn't reveal any problems, a subsequent CT-scan did, and Biden eventually went on to wear a walking boot to help him recover more quickly.
It's not known how long Romney will need to keep sporting a look once popularized by Frankenstein's monster before the stitches can be removed, but medical sites like Medscape say sutures on the face should stay in for between five to seven days to avoid any sign of marks or infection.
Reactions on social media to Mitt Romney's face ranged from some anger to amusement. Some were understandably upset to hear that the senator had gone back to visit his family, when they couldn't do the same, with one Twitter user echoing the thoughts of others who chastised Romney for taking the trip in the first place, saying:
"I feel pretty miffed that I haven't seen my elderly mother, my kids or grandkids in a year....I haven't even eaten at a restaurant for a year.....I know that I am not alone but sheesh, is there ONE politician who is taking this pandemic seriously.”
Other social media users also wondered whether Romney was trying to hide the real reason for his injury, because he might have been assaulted.
But once it was clear that Romney was in no danger, the jokes came flying fast and thick. A Twitter user wrote,
"The first rule of Romney Fight Club is you do not talk about Romney Fight Club.”
Tweeted another:
"Mitt loves the mosh pit."
Then there was one that reached across the ideological divide and offered the senator his best wishes for a speedy recovery:
"I'm a left leaning, progressive, liberal, independent, and I wish you a well [sic] recovery, Mitt Romney, one of the few remaining Republicans in leadership with some integrity and principal [sic]. Your joke about CPAC being the cause of your injuries was great, made me laugh."
