The Questions That Oprah Failed To Ask Meghan And Harry Are Raising Eyebrows

Oprah Winfrey's highly anticipated interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry aired on CBS on March 7, 2021. With it blew in a whirlwind of stunning revelations about the couple's time as senior members of the British royal family. There were some endearing and happy moments during the two-hour sit-down, of course. Prince Harry, for example, was the one to confirm fans' heavy speculation about their soon-to-be second child's sex. When Oprah asked Harry how he felt about having a second child, he told her, "Amazing. Just grateful. To have any child, any one or two, would be amazing. But to have a boy and then a girl, what more could you ask for? Now we’ve got our family, the four of us and our two dogs. It’s great." Despite Meghan and Harry's joyous announcement, the interview largely included heavy revelations like how an undisclosed royal family member discussed the potential color of Archie's skin with Prince Harry before he was born. Meghan, who is biracial, told Oprah that concerns were raised to her husband about, quote, "what that would mean and what that would look like." If that wasn't shocking enough, there was also Meghan's heartbreaking confession of having suicidal thoughts due to the dual affront of feeling trapped by royal obligations while being attacked by the British media. She went on to share what finally made her decide to speak out about the state of her mental health. Despite the lengthy headline-making royal interview, many felt it only raised even more lingering questions. Prince Harry, for example, omitted the identity of the royal family member who expressed concerns over his then-unborn son's skin tone. Oprah confirmed on CBS This Morning the day after the interview that it was not Queen Elizabeth II or Prince Phillip. When asked if she pressed Harry off-camera to identify the individual, Winfrey replied that she did, and Harry still didn't share who it was, but he did rule out his grandparents. There were plenty of other topics left not fully explored. One example, as the Daily Mail pointed out, was why, after Princess Diana's well-documented struggle as a royal after marrying Prince Charles, did Meghan not receive preparation and support? Meghan added that such a class, quote, "might exist for other members of the family," but it wasn't made available to her. Many viewers also wondered why Oprah didn't ask Meghan about her relationship with her family, which has been reportedly strained over the years. Well, as it turns out, Oprah didn't miss these questions at all. Instead, there was so much to say that the segment on Meghan's family aired the next day as part of an extended interview on CBS This Morning. In the extended cut, Oprah asked Meghan about how her dad, Thomas Markle, worked with the press and even sent a letter Meghan wrote him to the Daily Mail. Meghan said that she called her father and asked about it, but he denied working with the media. Meghan told her dad, "You know, the Institution has never intervened for anything for us, but they can try to go in and kill this story. But if they do this once, we're not going to be able to use that same leverage to protect our own kids one day." However, Meghan's father was ultimately, quote, "unable" to tell her the truth. Meghan also spoke about her half-sister on her father's side, Samantha Markle, who wrote a "tell-all" book about Meghan called The Diary of Princess Pushy's Sister. Meghan made it clear that she's estranged from Samantha, and has been for a long time, adding, "This is a very different situation than my dad, right. When you talk about betrayal, betrayal comes from someone that you have a relationship with." Meghan explained that she grew up as an only child and said that the last time she saw Samantha was 18 or 19 years ago. They didn't grow up together. Meghan also added that Samantha changed her last name back to Markle when Meghan started dating Harry.
