The Shady Side Of RuPaul That No One Knows About

Mar 24 2021
An absolute legend in the industry, RuPaul has done more for drag culture than perhaps any other person, alive or dead. But very few celebs enjoy such longevity without taking a few hits here and there, and RuPaul is no exception. Here is the shady side of RuPaul. In 2018, RuPaul was asked about how various genders and identities fit in RuPaul's Drag Race, and if it should just be for men. He told The Guardian, "Drag loses its sense of danger and its sense of irony once it's not men doing it, because at its core it's a social statement and a big 'eff you' to male-dominated culture. So for men to do it, it's really punk rock, because it's a real rejection of masculinity." Does that leave space for transgender women, like former contestant Peppermint, who came out on the show? RuPaul said, "You can identify as a woman and say you're transitioning, but it changes once you start changing your body. It takes on a different thing; it changes the whole concept of what we're doing. We've had some girls who've had some injections in the face and maybe a little bit in the butt here and there, but they haven't transitioned." According to Billboard, the host walked his comments back after some backlash, tweeting, "The trans community are heroes of our shared LGBTQ movement. You are my teachers."
