I Get Ghosted Because Of My Curved Spine | SHAKE MY BEAUTY

27-YEAR-OLD photographer Becky Dann from London, UK was born with Kyphoscoliosis – a severe curvature of the spine. Becky’s condition deteriorated over the years, resulting in her spine collapsing at the age of 10, and having to use a wheelchair to get around. The curvature of the spine has also affected Becky’s height, she’s 4ft 7". Becky was bullied during high school, which severely affected her confidence. “I tried to hide my disability, I grew my hair long, wore baggy clothes, I avoided mirrors and didn’t like looking at myself,” Becky told Truly. It wasn’t until college that Becky started to realise that although she was “different”, that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. Finding her confidence resulted in Becky starting a photography project called “I’m Fine”, featuring self portraits that highlighted her scoliosis. “I did it because I always felt like people treated me as if I’m fragile, just because I have a disability,” she added. Becky entered her photographs into a competition, resulting in her pictures going viral; “Suddenly I was very aware that my body and my disability was so public, and I was worried about what the response might be, but to my surprise it was very positive.” Becky now uses her social media platform to inspire others and show her disability for what it is. “My self-confidence has grown so much, I like who I am and I would never change my body.”
