Canadian authorities confirmed that Friesen was in custody. "Officials are providing consular assistance to the families and are in contact with local authorities," said Global Affairs representative Charlotte MacLeod, adding that "no further information could be disclosed due to privacy considerations."

The state prosecutor's office in Quintana Roo has confirmed the arrest of a foreign national in connection with the death of Kiara Agnew, a 23-year-old Canadian woman who was found dead at a resort in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. The office did not provide further details on the arrest. Agnew's aunt, Katlyn Levesque, expressed her devastation to CBC News, stating that Kiara loved to travel and was excited about her birthday trip with her boyfriend. She described her niece as a vibrant, courageous, and driven person with a heart of gold.

According to the Toronto Star, Kiara Agnew's aunt Katlyn Levesque, who lives in New Brunswick, is still awaiting autopsy results for her niece. Agnew, a Canadian citizen who would have turned 24 on March 11, was found dead at the Grand Sunset Princess Resort in Playa del Carmen, on Mexico’s Caribbean “gold coast” south of Cancun, a day after she arrived with her boyfriend, Ryan Friesen, 26, who plays for the Dawson Creek Canucks, a Junior “B” ice hockey team in British Columbia. Friesen has reportedly been detained in connection with the death.

Levesque said Agnew had been counting down to the Mexican trip since Christmas and that she was excited about it. The family wants to know what happened, and they are still in shock. Levesque described Agnew as a beautiful, wonderful person inside and out, who was robbed of her chance to experience life to the fullest.

The Dawson Creek branch of Lake View Credit Union, where Agnew worked, expressed their condolences on Facebook, stating that they are mourning the loss of their teammate and friend. The outlet has been unable to reach Friesen’s family, who have been in touch with Agnew’s family and expressed their devastation.

According to her aunt, Levesque, Kiara Agnew was enthusiastic about the trip to Mexico as she loved traveling and had always wanted to see the Mayan ruins. However, Levesque also revealed that she had warned her niece about the potential dangers of traveling abroad.

“I told her to be careful and to be safe. I said, ‘Don’t wander around alone and be mindful of your surroundings.’ After that, I never heard from her again,” Levesque said in an interview with the Star.
