Nick McKenzie follows the global hunt for Australia's most wanted | 60 Minutes Australia
Dec 06 2023
In 2021, investigative reporter Nick McKenzie concluded a decade-long pursuit of Australia's most wanted criminal, Hakan Ayik, in a 60 Minutes story. Ayik, a suspected Turkish-Australian drug trafficker, was part of a criminal network known as "The Aussie Cartel". He had amassed a significant fortune from importing large quantities of drugs into Australia. However, his arrogance and careless social media activity led to his downfall. McKenzie was able to locate Ayik's secret hideout by combining top-secret intelligence with multiple online clues. The story covers the thirteen-year search for Ayik, his collaboration with bikie crime, his escape from Australia, corruption in Australia's ports and airports, the use of encrypted phones, and Ayik's renouncement of his Australian citizenship. The story also features interviews with AFP Investigator Roland Singor and former Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission CEO, Michael Phelan.
