Echo’s Alaqua Cox Reveals Why Kingpin Cares So Much About Maya
Jan 07 2024
The new Marvel Spotlight series, Echo, is set to premiere on Disney+ and Hulu on January 9. The series stars Alaqua Cox as the anti-hero, Maya Lopez, also known as Echo, marking her as the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Echo joins the ranks of other morally ambiguous characters such as Bucky Barnes, Loki, and Wanda Maximoff.
Maya Lopez first made her appearance in the Disney+ miniseries, Hawkeye, where she was portrayed as a young mafia leader with a tragic connection to Clint Barton's vigilante alter ego, Ronin. This connection set the stage for her role as the antagonist in the miniseries and hinted at her relationship with Daredevil's nemesis, Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin.
The Echo series delves deeper into Maya's past, revealing her journey from being the adopted daughter of Kingpin to reconnecting with her estranged Choctaw family in Oklahoma. The series also stars Charlie Cox, Graham Greene, Devery Jacobs, Zahn McClarnon, and Chaske Spencer.
In an interview with Collider, Alaqua Cox discusses her character's complex moral status and how the series provides a raw and violent exploration of the trauma Maya has experienced throughout her life. It was also revealed that Echo's powers in the series will differ from those in the comics. Cox also talks about her relationship with Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin and her experience working with the Emmy-nominated actor.
The series Echo not only adds a new dimension to the Marvel Cinematic Universe but also gives voice to multiple underrepresented communities through the character of Maya Lopez and the real-life experiences of actress Alaqua Cox.
