Feb 04 2024
Writer-director Kobi Libii presents his completed film, The American Society of Magical Negroes, at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival after refining the script at the Sundance Labs. The movie, distributed by Focus Features, centers around Justice Smith's character, Aren, who becomes a member of a covert group of magical Black individuals dedicated to appeasing white people. As Aren questions the organization and the expectations placed on him to use his supernatural powers, he grapples with his role within the Society. In an interview with Collider, Libii, Smith, and David Alan Grier share their insights on the process of bringing the film to fruition and the obstacles they encountered along the way.
