Will Ferrell, the comedic genius known for his uproarious roles in Anchorman, Step Brothers, and more, recently shared a side-splitting secret on the MeSsy podcast. The 56-year-old actor confessed to feeling a twinge of embarrassment over his real name, which turned out to be the source of some school-time shenanigans.
Revealing that his legal name is John William Ferrell, Will recounted the "torture" he endured at the start of each school year. "This is a minor thing in terms of trauma, but I remember feeling so embarrassed because my real name is John," he chuckled.
As the first day of school rolled around, Will found himself in a hilarious predicament. "The teacher would call out 'John Ferrell?' and I'd cringe having to correct them, 'Here, but I go by Will, not John!'" he shared, reminiscing about the awkward encounters.
Will humorously recalled the week-long struggle of reminding teachers of his preferred moniker. "It took a week before the teacher remembered that I go by Will. So, the beginning of the school year was always like, 'Oh my gosh, I hate this. I have to remind the teacher that I'm not John,'" he laughed.
Surprisingly, Will disclosed that the name change wasn't his choice. His parents had named him John, although they always called him Will. Growing up as Will but legally named John Ferrell, the actor found himself in a comical conundrum.
Despite his embarrassment, Will acknowledged the absurdity of his predicament. "People are probably going to be listening to this podcast going, 'That's the lamest thing ever,'" he quipped, adding a touch of self-deprecating humor to the tale.
The MeSsy podcast, featuring hosts Jamie Lynn Sigler and Christina Applegate, provided a platform for Will to share this amusing anecdote. The trio, who starred together in the iconic comedy Anchorman, reminisced about their time on set and the chemistry that made the film a hit.
Reflecting on Christina Applegate's portrayal of Veronica Corningstone, Will praised her performance. "At the end of the day, Christina just checked all the boxes - between funny, smart, tough, because we needed Veronica to stand up to these doofuses, and she was the smartest person in the room," he commended.
Currently gracing the screens in Despicable Me 4, Will Ferrell continues to tickle funny bones with his upcoming film, You're Cordially Invited. Fans can look forward to more of his signature humor and quirky charm on the big screen.
