Lakers' Austin Reaves Claps Back at Critics of Bronny James Draft Pick
Los Angeles Lakers' rising star, Austin Reaves, isn't holding back when it comes to defending his new teammate, Bronny James. In an exclusive chat with Us Weekly, Reaves, 26, didn't mince words for those questioning the Lakers' decision to draft Bronny, the 19-year-old son of basketball legend LeBron James, in the recent NBA Draft.
“To all the haters out there, they need to find something better to do,” Reaves boldly stated during the 2024 American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe Resort. “Criticism often comes from those with nothing going on in their own lives.”
Decked out in TravisMathew gear as an ambassador for the brand, Reaves expressed genuine excitement about welcoming Bronny into the Lakers family. “I'm pumped for Bronny's arrival. He's going to face immense pressure due to his dad's legacy, but I know he's determined to carve his own path and excel. That's commendable,” Reaves shared.
Bronny's selection by the Lakers raised eyebrows, with critics citing nepotism and LeBron's influence as factors. However, Reaves is confident that Bronny can handle the spotlight. “He's been in the public eye since a young age and handles it like a pro. I have no doubt he'll put in the work and prove himself,” Reaves added.
Despite the speculation surrounding Bronny, Reaves humorously sidestepped any mentorship responsibilities, joking, “If LeBron was my dad, I wouldn't be looking to myself for guidance either!”
Alongside drafting Bronny, the Lakers made waves by appointing former Duke star and ESPN analyst JJ Redick as their new head coach. Despite Redick's lack of coaching experience, Reaves isn't fazed by the criticism. “Criticism is part of the game. People will always have something to say. Redick's using it as motivation to grow and excel,” Reaves remarked.
As the NBA season approaches, Reaves has been honing his golf skills, participating in the American Century Championship where he finished in a respectable tie for 13th place. Reflecting on the tournament, Reaves shared, “It's been an incredible experience. The energy, the fans, it's all been amazing. I've had a blast interacting with everyone.”
The 2024 American Century Championships saw former tennis pro Mardy Fish clinch victory, with NHL star Joe Pavelski and golf legend Annika Sorenstam securing second and third place, respectively.
Reaves' unwavering support for Bronny and Redick showcases the Lakers' unity and determination heading into the upcoming season. With a mix of seasoned talent and fresh faces, the Lakers are gearing up for an exciting journey on and off the court.
