Sue Bird's Inspiring Journey: Championing Pay Equity and Empowering Future Athletes
Sue Bird, the iconic figure in women's basketball, may have retired from the WNBA in 2022, but her passion for advocating for women's sports and pay equity remains unwavering. In an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, the 43-year-old athlete expressed her optimism about the future of women's sports, particularly addressing the notorious pay gap between the WNBA and the NBA.
"I do see us making major strides in the next couple of years," Bird shared, highlighting upcoming pivotal moments such as the media deal and a new collective bargaining agreement. These crucial contracts have the potential to ignite change and bridge the existing pay gap.
Bird emphasized that societal perceptions of women athletes have been a significant barrier to achieving pay equity. However, she noted a positive shift in recent years, attributing it to changing cultural views on women's sports.
"The more we can change how culture views athletes, I think the more we can change that pay gap," Bird added, underscoring the importance of reshaping societal attitudes towards women in sports.
Recently unveiled as the newest face of Barbie's Role Models line, Bird expressed her excitement and gratitude at being immortalized as a Barbie doll. The representation of a professional women's basketball player in the form of a Barbie holds immense significance for inspiring and empowering young girls, as well as challenging traditional gender norms.
"It's a Barbie of a professional women's basketball player, and that representation is 100 percent going to inspire and empower young girls," Bird shared. "It's also probably gonna change the minds of young boys."
Bird highlighted the importance of creating aspirational goals for young girls, encouraging them to see themselves as future professional athletes. She emphasized the distinction between being inspired by athletes and aspiring to follow in their footsteps, aiming to instill a sense of ambition and possibility in young fans.
As Bird reflected on her own experiences growing up without many female athlete role models, she recognized the impact of representation in shaping young minds and aspirations. The Barbie Role Model doll serves as a stepping stone towards elevating women's sports to the prominence they deserve.
Addressing the disparity in how young boys and girls perceive sports, Bird emphasized the need for girls to have aspirational goals beyond just learning skills. By challenging stereotypes and expanding perceptions, Bird aims to shape a more inclusive and equitable society.
Aside from her collaboration with Barbie, Bird remains actively engaged in various projects, including her platform Togethxr and her production company, A Touch More, co-founded with her fiancée, Megan Rapinoe. Despite retiring from professional basketball, Bird continues to champion for women's sports and advocate for equality.
Looking ahead, Bird expressed her excitement for the upcoming Summer Olympics, where she will be in attendance as a spectator. Beyond women's basketball, Bird shared her enthusiasm for break dancing, a new addition to the Olympic lineup this year, showcasing her diverse interests and ongoing support for athletic endeavors.
As Bird embraces her post-retirement journey, she remains committed to inspiring the next generation of athletes and reshaping the landscape of women's sports. Her dedication to advocating for pay equity and empowering young athletes serves as a beacon of hope for a more inclusive and equitable sporting world.
