Wrexham striker Rosie Hughes is singing praises for team co-owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds for their unwavering support of the women's soccer team. Hughes, 28, shared exclusively with us the impact the duo has had on the team, not just focusing on the men's side but also actively supporting the women's team.
"They've been there for us in more ways than one," Hughes expressed. "Attending events, watching our games, and truly being part of the football club, not just as figureheads but as active participants."
Since taking over Wrexham AFC in 2020, McElhenney and Reynolds have shown a genuine interest in all aspects of the club, including the women's team. Their involvement goes beyond the spotlight, with a genuine desire to connect with the players and understand their stories.
The women's team's journey was highlighted in the second season of Welcome to Wrexham, showcasing their promotion to the Adran Premier League in 2023. This exposure not only celebrates their success but also puts Wrexham on the map as a hub for top-tier women's soccer in North Wales.
Reflecting on the progress of women's sports, Hughes acknowledges the strides made but emphasizes the need for continued growth. While equal pay remains a goal, she recognizes the challenges in achieving parity due to differences in advertisement and exposure between men's and women's sports.
During the recent Wrex Coast Tour in Los Angeles, the Wrexham AFC Women's team collaborated with Good Sports and Gatorade to surprise the Empowering Leadership in Latina Athletes (ELLA) Sports Foundation. The team conducted a soccer clinic and donated $20,000 worth of equipment, inspiring young girls to pursue their passion for football.
"It was incredible to see the talent and passion in these young girls," Hughes shared. "Being able to interact with them and provide opportunities they may not have had otherwise was truly rewarding."
As the landscape of women's sports evolves, initiatives like the ELLA Sports Foundation play a crucial role in empowering girls from diverse backgrounds to excel in sports. Hughes commended the foundation for its efforts in creating opportunities for girls, especially those from underrepresented communities.
With the support of McElhenney and Reynolds, the Wrexham AFC Women's team is not only thriving on the field but also making a positive impact off the field. Their commitment to inclusivity and community engagement sets a precedent for the future of women's sports, inspiring the next generation of athletes to dream big and break barriers.
