The Rocket War Tradition in Greece: Rouketopolemos
Sep 12 2024
The Rocket War Tradition in Greece, known as Rouketopolemos, takes place annually during Orthodox Easter in Vrontados on the island of Chios. Two rival church congregations participate in a chaotic rocket battle, launching homemade rockets at each other's bell towers. The rockets, made from wooden sticks and filled with gunpowder, are fired from grooved platforms by intoxicated "Rocketeers." Despite being illegal, the event attracts tourists from all over the world.
