Selena Gomez Reveals Audition Mishap: 'Blacked Out' Dancing Like a 'Drunk Mad Woman'
Selena Gomez recently opened up about a rather unforgettable audition experience for a role in the highly anticipated operatic musical, Emilia Perez. The 32-year-old multi-talented US actress and singer shared her candid moment during the audition process, where she found herself in a whirlwind of emotions.
Attending the film's premiere in Los Angeles, Gomez graced the black carpet in a stunning black Elie Saab off-the-shoulder gown, radiating elegance alongside her co-stars Zoe Saldana, Karla Sofia Gascon, Adriana Paz, and Edgar Ramirez. Emilia Perez, a French musical performed in Spanish, narrates the tale of a Mexican cartel leader, portrayed by Gascon, who seeks the assistance of a high-powered lawyer, played by Saldana, to orchestrate a fake death and undergo sex-reassignment operations.
Gomez portrays the character of Jessi Del Monte, the drug lord's wife, in the film. Recalling her audition, Gomez shared with the Hollywood Reporter that she performed a powerful number from the movie called Bienvenida. She recounted how the director, Jacques Audiard, encouraged her to let loose, saying, "act drunk and throw your shoes if you want, and just go crazy."
Describing the moment, Gomez expressed, "I did it once and he was like, 'go crazier.' I went totally for it. I was standing on furniture and I blacked out, but I was just singing my heart out and dancing like a mad woman, a drunk mad woman, and it was a very crazy experience. But I was honored when he decided to ultimately go with me."
Having risen to fame as the beloved child star of Disney's Wizards Of Waverly Place, Gomez has continued to captivate audiences with her recent role in Disney+'s Only Murders In The Building, where she showcased her talent alongside comedy icons Steve Martin and Martin Short.
During the premiere of Emilia Perez, Gomez expressed her willingness to explore diverse roles in the future, emphasizing her desire to be inspired by great filmmakers. When asked about the Oscar buzz surrounding the film, Gomez humbly stated, "I don't like to think anything or be presumptuous, so I'm just going to say I'm so happy people are receiving it the way they are."
The film has generated significant excitement, being hailed as the "movie of the year" since the release of its first teaser last month.
