Intense Manhunt Underway After New York State Trooper Shot on Long Island
A dramatic manhunt is currently in progress after a New York State Police trooper, identified as Trooper Thomas Mascia, was shot by a driver on Long Island. The incident unfolded on the Southern State Parkway in West Hempstead, Nassau County, during the early hours of Wednesday.
According to police reports, Trooper Mascia, who was on a routine patrol, approached a vehicle parked on the median, suspecting it to be disabled. However, the situation took a dangerous turn when the driver unexpectedly opened fire through the window before speeding away.
New York State Police Superintendent Steven James described the harrowing moment when Mascia realized he had been hit, stating, "As he approached the rear of the suspect's vehicle, he heard several pops, and realized that he was wounded in his right leg." Mascia promptly radioed for help, exclaiming, "Shots fired! Shots fired! I'm hit! I think my kneecap is broken."
Despite being injured, the trooper managed to administer first aid to himself at the scene, displaying remarkable resilience. Fortunately, Mascia's injuries were deemed non-life-threatening, and he was expected to pull through. However, the extent of his recovery remains uncertain at this stage.
The shooting occurred shortly before midnight on the westbound side of the Southern State Parkway, between exits 17 and 18. Mascia was able to note the license plate of the suspect's vehicle, described as a dark car, possibly a black Dodge Charger, with a temporary paper New Jersey license plate: 997636T. The vehicle, which also features custom matte gray dual exhaust tips, fled the scene heading westbound on the parkway.
Law enforcement authorities have launched an intensive search for the suspect's vehicle, emphasizing the danger posed by an individual willing to open fire on a police officer. Anyone with information regarding the shooting or the whereabouts of the suspect's vehicle has been urged to contact Troop L in Farmingdale at 631-756-3300.
Following the incident, Trooper Mascia underwent leg surgery at Nassau University Medical Center and was reported to be in stable condition. His loved ones, including his girlfriend and parents, stood by him during this challenging time.
Expressing concern over the attack on Mascia, Long Island Troop L Commander Major Steve Udice highlighted the gravity of the situation, stating, "This trooper, his one and only intention was to help someone who appeared to need help, and he became a target for them. They started firing rounds at him. This is unacceptable, and we all need to recognize that if someone will target one of those who are out there to keep all of us safe, he or she is of great danger to every single one of us."
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, after visiting Mascia in the hospital, called for stricter measures against individuals using fake or stolen license plates. He urged for legislation that would mandate jail time for offenders and eliminate the possibility of bail for such crimes.
Meanwhile, Governor Kathy Hochul conveyed her support for Trooper Mascia, expressing her thoughts and well-wishes for his recovery. She indicated her intention to speak with the trooper once he is able to do so.
Neighbours of Mascia, residing approximately a mile from the shooting location, praised the trooper for his exemplary character and service. Tom King described Mascia as "a complete gentleman, very willing to do anything for his neighbors," emphasizing his positive impact on the community.
As the search for the suspect intensifies, authorities have announced a $5,000 reward for any information leading to the apprehension of the individual responsible for the shooting. Despite the absence of body camera footage capturing the incident, investigators are diligently pursuing all leads to bring the perpetrator to justice.
