Jurnee Smollett: “I know what it's like to be in a police car for no reason & harassed” | GLAMOUR UK
Aug 18 2020
Jurnee Smollett powerfully opens up about the racism she has faced growing up as "the only black family in the neighbourhood," and having, "our car being keyed with the N-word. I remember my mom being called it. I remember soda cans being thrown at me and my siblings when we were out jogging." The Lovecraft Country star also candidly discusses raising her three year old son, Hunter saying, “I bust my ass to provide for and protect my son, but you cannot buy yourself out of racism. It's just not possible. I know what it's like to witness a family member, a brother, a friend, put in the back of a police car. I know what it's like to be put in the back of a police car for no reason and harassed. These are things that I'm aware of and so it's not lost upon me that I am raising a black son in America."
