What The Kids Missed In Up
Sep 26 2020
Pixar's Up is a delightful and heartfelt film about the power of love, determination, and dreams. While the movie definitely delivers a magical experience for people of all ages, there are some aspects of this animated masterwork that young viewers might not catch.

The emotional montage towards the beginning of Up is likely to draw a mixture of smiles and tears from everyone watching the film, but younger viewers might not notice some of the subtle details that take place. It's a heartwarming moment when Ellie and Carl decide to have a baby and start decorating a nursery, but the joy quickly fades when we see them looking upset in the doctor's office. It's clear from this scene that Ellie suffered a miscarriage, and the fact that we never see the couple with kids after that point indicates that she isn't able to have a baby.

Even though there's no audible dialogue, the montage packs a punch. It's also pretty notable for an animated film to tackle such mature subject matter. Even in the 21st century, miscarriage is a topic that's sometimes considered taboo to discuss. To see it addressed in a mainstream family movie is a powerful and groundbreaking moment that helps people open up about miscarriage and infertility.
