How Champion Peter Westbrook Changed Inner-City Fencing
Dec 30 2020
Born to a Japanese mother and an African American father, Peter Westbrook grew up in poverty and faced taunts for being mixed-race -- but harnessed his own childhood experiences to fuel his drive for fencing. He became a 6-time Olympian and 13-time U.S. National champion fencer, the flag bearer for the 1992 Olympics, and the first African American to hold a national gold title in saber fencing. Westbrook went on to found the Peter Westbrook Foundation, leveraging fencing to enrich kids’ lives. Staff have included world-class coaches, medalists and Olympians, and the PWF has trained many of the world’s most notable fencers -- including eight Olympians.
