Why Meghan Markle's Oprah Interview Dress Is Raising Eyebrows
Mar 02 2021
The first trailer for Oprah Winfrey's interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle aired on Feb. 28, 2021, with the special set to air the following Sunday. In the trailer, it appears as though Harry and Meghan open up about their experiences since getting married and why they decided to step back from their duties to the palace and move to California.

The trailer may hold one specific clue:

"My biggest concern was history repeating itself."

Prince Harry's likely referring to his mother, Princess Diana, who died in a car crash, after being targeted and harassed for years by the relentless U.K. media. Likewise, Meghan has been under scrutiny since she first began dating Harry, and it seems like that might have had something to do with their decision to step away from the royal family and the spotlight that comes with it.

However, even out of the spotlight, Meghan still shines. Especially in the Armani dress she's wearing during the Oprah interview.

For her sit down with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan Markle donned her signature loose bun and a floral printed dress by Armani that retails for $4,700. It's already sold out, but Page Six reported that a similar dress is still available. She also wore, per the same outlet, suede Aquazzura pumps, a Cartier Love bracelet, a necklace from Pippa Small, and blue topaz earrings. Also on her wrist? Another Cartier bracelet, believed to be an heirloom from Princess Diana.

Princess Diana seems to loom over the interview, whether it's Meghan's bracelet or the subject matter of the conversation. Prince Harry seems to allude to the criticisms of his mother and his wife in the British media, comparing their two experiences. According to NBC news, Prince Harry said in the interview,

"I'm just really relieved and happy to be sitting here talking to you with my wife by my side, because I can't begin to imagine what it must have been like for her going through this process by herself all those years ago. Because it has been unbelievably tough for the two of us, but at least we had each other."

Meghan Markle, pregnant with her second child, looks almost pained throughout the trailer for the interview. In one instance, she's shown nodding as Oprah asks her if she was "silent or silenced" by the royal family.

In another moment in the trailer, Meghan is clutching her husband's hand as he tells Oprah about his fears for his wife. Although the royals are often seen as being a little tight lipped about their personal lives, it sounds like Harry and Meghan get pretty real with Oprah.

In the past, Prince Harry has not shied away from saying all he can about his experience with his family, especially when it comes to his wife. In a 2019 statement, Harry said he was suing some British outlets for slandering his wife.

He wrote,

"Unfortunately, my wife has become one of the latest victims of a British tabloid press that wages campaigns against individuals with no thought to the consequences — a ruthless campaign that has escalated over the past year, throughout her pregnancy and while raising our newborn son. There is a human cost to this relentless propaganda, specifically when it is knowingly false and malicious, and though we have continued to put on a brave face — as so many of you can relate to — I cannot begin to describe how painful it has been."

Harry continued in his 2019 comments,

"Though this action may not be the safe one, it is the right one. Because my deepest fear is history repeating itself. I've seen what happens when someone I love is commoditized to the point that they are no longer treated or seen as a real person. I lost my mother and now I watch my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces."

This interview with Oprah is the latest chance for Harry and Meghan to share their experience. The Armani dress is just the icing on a cake of juicy new details about the inner life of the royals.
