Black History Month was always a pretty depressing month in school, learning about the struggle black people faced - and still face - in America and in other countries. Of course, black children need to know where they’ve come from and what they’ve overcome to be able to better celebrate where they are headed, and the people of the United States needs to remember their treatment of black Americans to ensure we don’t have a repeat. But the way we were taught to think of Black History Month in the past left little room for hope of current success on the same level, often leaving off the African history of civilized kingdoms before being stolen from their native land, and often trailing off sometime around the 1960s after the Civil Rights Movement, as if black people were only marginally successful since that time. We take a deep dive into the modern black activists, industry leaders and heroes.
