Refugee Soccer | Playing For Change
Mar 20 2018
Landing in the US after fleeing conflicts in Somalia, Yemen and Egypt, then-17-year-old Zaynab Abdi founded a soccer team within her international high school -- made up entirely of teen refugees like herself -- all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA, Student Council presidency and becoming the school Valedictorian. Now a student at St Catherine University, she’s begun a new organization: one that encourages all women, but specifically welcomes women of color, to become involved in campus sports and play soccer as a team. Beyond that, she’s even represented The Malala Fund at the UN General Assembly and works as an Immigrants and Refugees Young Ambassador for the Green Card Voices.
