There’s a saying amongst the Dong ethnic group in China’s Guizhou province: “Eat rice to nourish the body, and sing songs to nourish the heart.” The Dong’s hundreds of songs aren’t simply for pleasure; they’re the preservation of stories that predate written language. From her home of Zaidang Village, one of the music’s ancient centers, master singer Hu Guomei introduces us to this lyrical tradition.
