McBride, aged 47, was found dead in his apartment in Markham, Ontario, on May 17, 1982, with multiple stab wounds. The investigators believe he was killed two days prior.
The case was revisited by the Toronto Police in 2016, with the aim of retesting exhibits and items seized during the original investigation. The goal was to see if the advancements in forensic testing and the creation of a DNA databank could provide any new leads.
The breakthrough came when investigators used Investigative Genetic Genealogy (IGG) in a private lab. They found DNA that matched not McBride, but the suspect, identified as William Taylor. Taylor was 34 years old at the time of the murder but passed away in May 2023. The resolution of this cold case demonstrates the power of advanced DNA technology in solving decades-old crimes.
