Anna Kendrick's Shocking Revelation About a Casting Director's Comment at 19 in 'Woman of the Hour'

Oct 27 2024

Anna Kendrick recently made her directorial debut with the 1970s-inspired true crime film, 'Woman of the Hour,' currently streaming on Netflix. The actress delved into her own past experiences while directing her first feature film.

During a promotional interview on SiriusXM's Crime Junkie AF podcast with host Ashley Flowers, Kendrick, 39, disclosed that she incorporated a real-life incident into the movie. She revealed that she had one of her actors recite a line that a casting director had told her when she was just 19 years old.

Recalling the unsettling encounter, Kendrick shared, "They ask me if I'm willing to do nudity, and then this guy makes a very specific and weird remark about my body, and that happened to me verbatim when I was 19. Verbatim. In an audition. Yeah. Crazy. Absolutely crazy."

While Kendrick did not specify the exact line that featured the comment, the scene in 'Woman of the Hour' portrays Kendrick's character expressing her discomfort with filming nude scenes during an audition. One of the casting directors dismissively responds, "Oh, I'm sure they're fine," in the film.

'Woman of the Hour' is inspired by the chilling true story of Cheryl Bradshaw and her chilling encounter with Rodney Alcala, a notorious serial killer in the 1970s. The film follows Kendrick's character, Cheryl, as she unwittingly meets Alcala on an episode of The Dating Game during his heinous "yearlong murder spree."

Reflecting on the film, Kendrick expressed her enjoyment in creating a period piece and immersing herself in the seventies era. She also highlighted the relevance of certain themes in the movie to the present day, emphasizing that some of the depicted behaviors are not confined to the past.

Featuring a talented cast including Tony Hale, Daniel Zovatto, Nicolette Robinson, Pete Holmes, Autumn Best, Kathryn Gallagher, and Kelley Jakle, 'Woman of the Hour' is now available for streaming on Netflix.
