May 24 2024

Former Olympic gymnast Mary Lou Retton's daughters have come to her defense after facing criticism for starting a fundraising campaign to help cover their mother's medical expenses. Retton, who battled a rare form of pneumonia in October 2023, expressed her gratitude towards her daughters and the nearly 10,000 donors who contributed over $459,000.

Retton addressed the critics, stating, "My daughters stepped up to the plate, and they saved my life. All the love and support saved my life, and these finances will only go to medical bills." She emphasized that any remaining funds would be donated to the American Lung Association, as she is now a member of the lung disease community.

She thanked her daughters โ€“โ€“ Shayla, McKenna, Skyla, and Emma Schrepfer โ€“โ€“ for their unwavering support during her health crisis. Retton credited her daughters for inspiring her and being her biggest accomplishments.

Reflecting on the overwhelming support, Retton shared how she was moved to tears upon seeing the donations and the mounting medical bills. The Olympic gold medalist, whose speaking engagements were impacted by the pandemic, expressed her gratitude for the outpouring of generosity.

In January, Retton revealed that she had been hospitalized for a rare form of pneumonia and was on the brink of being put on life support. Four months later, she continues to rely on oxygen and faces challenges in returning to her speaking engagements.

Despite the hurdles, Retton remains optimistic and determined to regain her strength. She acknowledged the ongoing support from her daughters and the community, highlighting the importance of unity and compassion during difficult times.
