Laurie Hernandez Spills the Beans on Gymnasts Joining Simone Biles at Olympics! Get the Inside Scoop Here!
Jun 24 2024

With Olympic gymnastic trials just around the corner, the anticipation is building as fans eagerly await to see who will secure a spot on Team USA alongside the legendary Simone Biles. Laurie Hernandez, a two-time Olympic medalist and former teammate of Biles, is here to give us the inside scoop on the athletes to watch heading into Paris.

"An obvious one is Simone Biles," Hernandez, 24, exclusively shared with Us Weekly while promoting On Location Olympic hospitality packages. "Barring any injuries, she's in, and Team USA definitely needs her."

The most decorated gymnast in history, Simone Biles, with an impressive 37 Olympic and World Championship medals, is set to make a comeback at the Paris games after withdrawing from the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo due to mental health struggles.

Aside from Biles, Hernandez revealed her predictions for rounding out Team USA. "Shilese Jones is also an athlete who has been really on [Simone's] tail throughout the year," Hernandez explained. Jones, 21, recently withdrew from the U.S. gymnastics championships due to a shoulder injury but plans to compete at the trials.

"Spots three, four, and five are really up for grabs," Hernandez added. "Recently at championships, Skye Blakely, this underdog younger athlete, has come in and just knocked it out of the park. So if she can hit all of her routines, she's also in."

At just 19 years old, Texas native Skye Blakely finished second at the National Gymnastics Championships earlier this month, trailing just behind Biles and earning two silver medals and two bronze medals.

However, Hernandez acknowledges that if Biles performs at her full capacity, there is no stopping her. "What makes an extraordinary athlete is the acknowledgment that mental health exists. I think all the best athletes recognize that the mind is a powerful thing, and we can only go so far with our bodies," Hernandez shared. "Athletes like Simone, Michael Phelps, and Naomi Osaka, who acknowledge that mental health exists and that we get to where we are because we're paying attention, are truly remarkable."

Having competed alongside Biles in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics as part of the most decorated American Olympic gymnastics team of all time, Hernandez retired from the sport in 2021. However, she is returning to the Olympic stage as an NBC correspondent for women's gymnastics and is excited to reunite with her former teammate.

"Especially at these competitions, I'm able to go and say 'Hi,' and she's always so friendly and kind. I can tell she's kind to her teammates as well," Hernandez shared about Biles. "I think it's important that we have an athlete who has been around for so long guiding the way for up-and-coming athletes. So that's wonderful."

Hernandez also highlighted the unique experience of watching Biles compete in person, emphasizing that "live gymnastics is very different than what you're seeing on TV."

To provide more fans with the opportunity to witness the Paris Olympics in person, Hernandez has partnered with On Location to promote their hospitality packages for the Games. "There's going to be unmatched views of the opening ceremony, which for the first time ever is not being held in an arena or stadium. It's being done by sending athletes down the Seine River," she revealed. "Also, Team USA House is opening its doors to the public for the first time ever, which is going to be exciting because I remember as an athlete that was a place I wanted to go. The fact that the public can experience that as well is a really unique opportunity."

Official On Location Hospitality Packages for the 2024 Paris Olympics are now on sale, offering fans a chance to be part of the action and witness history in the making.
