Since 2012, TLC's "My 600-lb Life" has followed a year (or longer) in the lives of dozens of morbidly obese people trying to lose weight. Houston surgeon Younan Nowzaradan (aka "Dr. Now") guides these patients on their extreme weight loss journeys, typically recommending gastric bypass surgery or sleeve gastrectomy surgery. Surgeries that carry this much risk are often difficult for low-income patients to obtain on their own, since the high costs and medical insurance approvals can be challenging to navigate.
